The annual Evansville City Swim Meet will be held July 7-8 from noon to 6 p.m. at Garvin Park Pool. Along with the scheduled meets, a special memorial will be held to honor a local firefighter who died in a tragic accident.

Jeremy Tighe, a 2011 Central High School graduate, avid swimmer, and swim coach was killed on duty as a volunteer firefighter with the McCutchanville Fire Department when the fire truck he was in hit a utility pole on St. Joseph Avenue on February 22, 2012. He was 18 years old.

Tighe was a former lifeguard and served as swim coach for Howell Pool for local teams before joining the McCutchanville Fire Department. He enjoyed being an active member of the Evansville community.

The swim meet will involve all of the city's public pool swim teams. As a result, all neighborhood pools, with the exceptions of Rochelle-Landers Pool, will be closed both days in order for staff to help with the swim meet.

The preliminaries for the City meet will start at 9 a.m. Saturday and the finals will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

One person is confirmed dead following a three alarm fire in McCutchanville Tuesday night. The fire was reported about 6:30 p.m. at 738 Strawberry Hill Rd. Fire officials say when they arrived, two homes were fully involved. The flames then quickly spread to two other homes in the neighborhood. Adding to firefighter's concerns, a gas line in one of the homes caught fire causing the fire to burn hot and move very fast fire officials said. After the fire was tapped out, crews searched the residences for one man who was reported to be unaccounted for. Firefighters found his body inside one of the homes that was fully engulfed when they arrived.

Central Dispatch told crews en route that they had multiple calls on this fire, some reporting 2 homes were on fire. They told dispatch to send out a second alarm at this point. Upon arrival, fire command immediately requested a third alarm. Firefighters from multiple agencies across the area responded to the alarm. They quickly knocked the large, multiple structure blaze down and command reported the fire tapped out approximately 8:00 p.m. One firefighter did suffer from dehydration after the fire and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported. Fire investigators remain on scene and the cause of the fire is not known as of this posting.
