The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to restrict southbound traffic to one lane on the US 41 Twin Bridges between Henderson and Evansville today.

This southbound lane restriction is to allow the repair of a section metal hand railing that was knocked off the bridge by a recent traffic crash.

Southbound traffic will be restricted to one lane starting at about 8:30 a.m., CDT, today.  The lane restriction is expected to be in place about 3 to 5 hours to allow the railing repairs.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 2 Highway Crews plan to pre-treat area highways to prepare for a threat of freezing rain and sleet that is expected to sweep across the region in the early morning hours on Thursday.

Temperatures on Wednesday night are expected in the mid-20’s.  This wintry mix is expected to blast across the area in just a few hours.  However, it has the potential to create hazardous driving conditions on the Thursday morning commute.  Motorists are advised to closely monitor the local weather forecast as this system approaches and be prepared for changing highway conditions.

Motorists should be alert for slow moving trucks during daylight hours today and all day Wednesday as crews go about preparing roadways for this event.

Pre-treating involves spraying a brine solution on roadways that dries to leave a fine powder of salt.  That salt coating is then available to be activated as precipitation starts to fall during the early hours of a snow/ice event.  In addition to improving safety by initially melting snow and ice as it falls, the salt powder also keeps snow and ice from bonding to the driving surface making it easier for plows to push it off the roadway later in the event.

Pre-treating requires a fairly specific set of weather conditions.  Temperatures have to be above about 22 degrees to allow brine to be applied, otherwise it could freeze when it hits the road surface creating a hazard.  Kentucky highway crews generally do not pre-treat when rain is expected in advance of a winter weather event because the rain would wash away the benefits of the salt powder.

Crews plan to start treating “A” snow and ice priority routes, then move to “B” and “C” routes as time allows on Wednesday.  Time restrictions may not allow all routes to be pre-treated.  Crews will be attempting to complete as many miles of highway as possible.

KYTC District 2 crews are responsible for 3300 miles of highway in 11 Western Kentucky counties.  Traveling all routes is the equivalent of traveling from Miami, FL, to Seattle, WA.  Crews may travel all highways in the district several times during a single snow and ice event.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has established snow/ice priority routes for each county.  Maps showing the snow removal priority routes are available at http://go.usa.gov/gmDe.  In the initial hours of a winter weather event, crews focus much of their attention on “A” Snow/Ice Priority Routes such as Interstates, Parkways and U.S. Highways.  As conditions improve on major transportation routes, crews move to “B” routes which are generally connector routes, then move to “C” routes which are generally rural secondary highways.

UPDATE 10/24/12:  The contractor has some additional prep work to do under the SB bridge..no SB lane restriction today. The contractor is planning to set up a SB lane restriction on Thursday, 10/25.

ORIGINAL POST
From the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet:
A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to restrict southbound traffic to one lane on the US 41 Twin Bridges at Henderson on Wednesday and Thursday, October 24 & 25, 2012.

This lane restriction is to allow the replacement of two rocker bearings on southbound pier number 11.  This work site is on the Henderson approach end of the southbound bridge.  However, it will required a lane restriction the entire length of the southbound bridge.  Preliminary work on this project started several weeks ago, but completion of the project had to be delayed to allow some additional fabrication of required materials.

The contractor will use four 100-ton jacks to raise bridge support beams about 1/4th of an inch to allow the old rocker bearings to be removed and the new bearings to be placed on top of the pier.

This work will require southbound traffic to be restricted to one lane from approximately 9:00 a.m., to 3:00 p.m., CDT, on Wednesday, and possibly Thursday.  The contractor can also place lane restrictions on the bridge between 7:00 p.m. Wednesday and 5:00 a.m., Thursday, if required.

The contractor is restricted to working during specific off-peak travel periods with substantial penalties for keeping the work zone up outside of allowable working hours.  This work schedule is weather dependent.  In case of rain the lane restriction will automatically move to the next working day until complete.

All southbound traffic in this work zone will move to the left-hand or passing lane.  Southbound motorists should be prepared to encounter slowing and merging traffic near the entrance to the Trocadero Convenience Store.  This work zone will have a strictly enforced 45 mile per hour speed limit that will extend the entire length of the bridge.

No northbound lane restrictions will be required for this project.

The KYTC plans to restrict traffic to one lane on the US 41 Twin Bridges at Henderson starting at approximately 9:30 a.m., today (October 15, 2012).

This lane restriction is to allow required maintenance work on the bridge navigation lights as requested by the US Coast Guard.

A lane restriction is expected to go up on the northbound bridge starting at about 9:30 a.m., CDT. This northbound lane restriction is expected to be in place about 2 hours. Once work is complete on the northbound bridge the crew will immediately move to the southbound bridge. The lane restriction on the southbound bridge is expected to be up from about Noon to about 2:00 p.m., CDT, today.

All traffic will move to the left-hand or passing lane in this work zone. Motorists should be alert for slowing and merging traffic on the bridge approaches. Caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and maintenance personnel are on the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow.

The contractor will use four 100-ton jacks to raise bridge support beams about 1/4th of an inch to allow old rocker bearings to be removed and new bearings to be placed on the top of the pier.

Southbound motorists should be prepared to encounter lane restrictions between 9:00 a.m., CDT, and 3:00 p.m., on Thursday.  The work zone will then be removed to allow normal traffic flow on the southbound bridge during the afternoon commute.  Lane restrictions are then expected to be back on the bridge from 7:00 p.m., Thursday evening to 5:00 a.m., Friday morning.  Should the work require, lane restrictions may also be up on the bridge from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., on Friday.

The contractor is restricted to working specific hours to minimize traffic disruptions.  The crew will start work underneath the bridge at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday to prepare for the southbound lane restriction to be in place starting at 9:00 a.m.  The contractor will be fined $1,500 for every 15 minutes a lane restriction is in place outside of allowable working hours.

Traffic Advisory from KYTC:
As a reminder, SOUTHBOUND lane restrictions are expected on the US 41 Twin Bridges starting Monday, August 20, 2012.

Plans call for all SOUTHBOUND traffic to move to the left-hand or passing lane in this work zone starting at about 8:00 a.m., CDT, Monday, and continuing through next week.  The SOUTBOUND work zone traffic restriction is expected to remain in place until about 3:00 p.m., each day.

SOUTHBOUND motorists should be prepared to merge starting near the weigh station and be fully moved to the left-hand lane by the time they reach the end of the bridge.

Motorists can do their part to reduce traffic snarls by practicing patience and courtesy as they enter this work zone.

The southbound lane restriction is to allow a detailed inspection of the bridge structure.  Engineers are using a Snooper Truck to access the deck substructure on the bridge.  To speed the inspection process, a climb team will be inspecting the bridge superstructure and inspectors will be using a man-lift to access the approaches.
